New Yorker Hotel Sign to Go Dark for Earth Hour

March 25, 2009 By: Mackenzie Allison

At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, the New Yorker Hotel will turn off its six-story "New Yorker" sign in support of Earth Hour—a global initiative of the World Wildlife Fund. Hotels across the world will participate in the event to show their support for the fight against global warming.

The hotel, which recently completed a $70 million renovation, has also taken other steps to show its support of the environment, such as replaced its sign, which was first lit in the 1950s, for an environmentally safe version in 2005. The current sign is energy efficient and remains cool at all times. The hotel is also decreasing its use of energy for heating and air-conditioning by 30 to 40 percent.
