Ritz-Carlton to Partner With UN on IMPACT 2030 Sustainability Initiative

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is set to be the first Founding Partner of IMPACT 2030, a global collaboration between the United Nations and the international business community, created to mobilize corporate volunteers to help achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Impact 2030 leverages the momentum of the United Nations resolution A/RES/66/67 adopted by the 66th General Assembly which states the following: "The General Assembly […] welcomes the expanding involvement of the private sector in support of volunteerism, and encourages its further engagement through the expansion of corporate volunteering and employee volunteer activities."

Impact 2030 is the only global business sector led effort designed to marshal the power of employee volunteering to address UN Sustainable Development Goals and the first time that companies will unite to address UN development goals through collaboration. The collaborating UN agencies include UN Volunteers and the UN Office for Partnerships.

The SDGs are being developed as part of a process launched at the Rio+20 Conference. At the conference it was decided establish an "inclusive and transparent intergovernmental process open to all stakeholders, with a view to developing global sustainable development goals to be agreed by the General Assembly".

The Rio+20 outcome document The Future We Want resolved to establish an inclusive and transparent intergovernmental process on SDGs that is open to all stakeholders with a view to developing global sustainable development goals to be agreed by the UNGA. The outcome document mandated the creation of an inter-governmental Open Working Group, that will submit a report to the 68th session of the General Assembly containing a proposal for sustainable development goals for consideration and appropriate action. The outcome document specifies that the process leading to the SDGs needs to be coordinated and coherent with the processes considering the post 2015 development agenda and that initial input to the work of the Open Working Group will be provided by the UNSG in consultation with national governments.

Ritz-Carlton president and COO Herver Humler will announce the Impact 2030 initiative at the United Nations Headquarters on December 5, International Volunteer Day.
