UPDATE

The summer Atlantic hurricane season is now hitting "prime time" with late August, September and October being prolific months for storm activity. As one eastern Caribbean weather disturbance has the potential to strengthen into a Tropical Storm by Sunday, Carnival Cruise Lines (www.goccl.com) has adjusted two cruise itineraries.

As a precaution, the line has modified the eight-day cruise of Carnival Splendor, which departed from New York on Aug. 20. The order of a few ports is changed, and "we are having to swap out one port (Grand Turk) with a stop in Port Canaveral instead to steer clear of the storms predicted path," said Vance Gulliksen, a Carnival spokesperson.

He noted that the substituted call at Port Canaveral will give guests a chance to visit an Orlando theme park, Cocoa Beach, the Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex and other central Florida attractions. The ship is at sea today and the new itinerary for Saturday and beyond is as follow:

  • Saturday, Aug. 23: Half Moon Cay from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (originally Grand Turk);
  • Sunday, Aug. 24: Nassau from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m (originally Half Moon Cay); and
  • Monday, Aug. 25: Port Canaveral, FL 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (originally was Nassau).

The ship will spend the remainder of the voyage at sea, prior to its return to New York.

Late Friday, Aug. 22, the line also announced that it would adjust the order of ports of call within the Carnival Liberty's Aug. 20 departure from Port Canaveral. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the ship will spend the day at sea, instead of at Grand Turk. Then on Monday, Aug. 25, the ship will call at St. Thomas instead of San Juan.

On Tuesday, Aug. 26, Carnival Liberty will call at St. Maarten not St. Thomas, and on Wednesday, Aug. 27, it will call at San Juan not St. Maarten. Then Carnival Liberty will call at Grand Turk on Thursday, Aug. 28, instead of spending the day at sea.  The rest of the itinerary remains unchanged.
