Charleston, SC's City Board of Architectural Review voted unanimously to grant conceptual approval to the proposed new cruise terminal project’s design, which was developed with the aid of public input.

After a presentation by the South Carolina Ports Authority’s design team, the BAR approved the design plan, which is the conversion of an existing cargo-handling building into a passenger terminal. The SCPA voluntarily submitted the design to the architectural review process.

One aspect of the design involves removing the chain link fence surrounding the property to better blend with its surroundings. More detailed design plans are to be presented at a future BAR meeting. Conversion of the existing building is expected to begin later this year, with the new cruise terminal scheduled to open in early 2013.
