November 9, 2007 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

The Spirit of Nantucket, a 102-guest ship operated by Seattle-based Cruise West, purposely ran aground after the ship began taking on water early Thursday morning after apparently striking something in the Intracoastal Waterway off Virginia. The ship's captain decided to run the ship aground to avoid taking on more water, reported Petty Officer Chris Evanson of the Coast Guard. No injuries were reported among the 66 passengers and crew who were ferried to shore by the Coast Guard. It's also been reported that no fuel spilled into the river from the accident. The Spirit of Nantucket had departed three days earlier from Alexandria, VA, on a 10-day sailing to Charleston, SC. The cause of the accident is under investigation. (DE)
