InnerSea Discoveries Upgrade Two Ships for Alaska Season

InnerSea Discoveries' SE AlaskaIn preparation for its inaugural season in Southeast Alaska this May, InnerSea Discoveries is equipping its two expedition ships, Wilderness Discoverer and Wilderness Adventurer, with new features. Starting at $1,795 per person, double occupancy, seven-night cruises will feature an underwater bow camera, high-tech kayak launchers and iPod docks, complemented by large, view windows adorning every guest cabin, flatscreen televisions with DVD players, and outside hot tubs on deck.

This season, each ship will carry 28 styles of Necky kayaks, suitable for pro and beginners. Multiple guided trips during each cruise will focus on the ease of launching and return of kayaks; to this end, both ships have been equipped with custom made EZ Dock kayak launch systems that are able to quickly and safely launch four kayaks at a time. Kayakers will be able to guide themselves back onto the ship the system.

On board, guests can enjoy the view from the underwater camera mounted on the ships' bow, streaming video to flatscreen televisions in all guest rooms and the lounge. We like the underwater hydrophone pipes to hear the sound of wales. In your room, enjoy the ships' eco-friendly memory foam mattresses in twin, double or queen beds and bath amenities, as well as the features including sauna, exercise equipment, complimentary on-deck yoga classes, a large resource library, well-stocked DVD library and board games. Available for a fee, consider massages courtesy of the professional masseuse.

Inside the ships, the newly restored interiors have contemporary colors, complementing the surrounding wilderness, and the lounges have been fitted to feel like a cross between a National Park lodge and a quaint neighborhood pub with a bar top made from salvaged Alaskan yellow cedar.

Sailing between Juneau and Ketchikan from May through September, the Western Coves and Eastern Coves itinerary can be combined for a two-week Ultimate Adventure. Rates include transfers and all activities except optional excursions. We like the optional port charges at $167 extra, per person per week, including massages, wine, spirits, beer and gratuities. Look for dates throughout 2011 designated as Family Discoveries, focusing on activities customized for all ages. Kids 12 years and younger receive a 25 percent savings on kids 12 years and 30 percent discount on Family Discoveries Voyages.
