Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic has announced a new Make Art, Make a Difference artist-in-residence program for select Galapagos Islands voyages this August and September.
Designed to help guests make art and support local artisans while traveling in the Galapagos, travelers will join artists Amy Bartlett Wright and Jonathan Alderfer for drawing sessions on board and ashore aimed at helping them capture the wildlife of the Galapagos. The drawing sessions are in addition to the other activities available on all of Lindblad's Galapagos expeditions.
Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Fund’s trash-to-treasure transformation through presentations and a visit to the Fund’s newest glass workshop on Santa Cruz, and see how local artisans transform recycled paper into jewelry. Plus, they will return home with two complimentary keepsakes made by artisans from recycled materials: a handmade glass and a Paper to Pearls keychain.

Amy Bartlett Wright worked with the scientist Dr. E.O.Wilson and illustrated his 1986 The Diversity of Life published by Harvard University Press. She drew finch specimens at the Harvard Museum of Natural History that Darwin described following his studies in the Galápagos. She illustrated a book on shell identification for National Geographic and some 68 additional books, plus hundreds of magazines. She teaches illustration at Rhode Island School of Design, and has taught students aged 5-80, making drawing and painting fun to learn. Wright will be aboard National Geographic Endeavour on the September 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2016 departures.
Jonathan Alderfer has specialized in painting birds and natural history subjects for more than thirty years. For ten years he was National Geographic’s resident birding expert, and authored, edited, or illustrated more than twenty books for the National Geographic Society, including the best-selling Field Guide to the Birds of North America. Alderfer is an avid birder and excels at teaching other nature lovers—whatever their age and level of skill—how to draw and paint birds. During the summer of 2015 he taught a weeklong workshop, Arts and Birding, at National Audubon’s Hog Island Camp in Maine. Alderfer will be aboard National Geographic Islander departures from August 20, 27, September 3 & 10, 2016.
