Australis, a small ship expedition cruise line in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, has announced plans for its new ship: the Ventus Australis

The ship, which is under construction in Chile, can be booked now for sailings starting in January 2018. All aspects of the 210 passenger ship have been designed to give it the maneuverability necessary to navigate the fjords and channels of the region, Australis said.

The name Ventus Australis is Latin for “Southern Wind,” which is meant to reflect the distinct weather of the Tierra del Fuego, Australis said.

Ventus Australis will be the sister ship of Stella Australis, which operates three-, four-, and seven-night programs in the region. Ventus Australis will operate four-night programs or, if combined, eight nights.

The ship is being built at the Asenav shipyard.

From Australis, three-, four-, and seven-night programs explore the Magellan Strait, Beagle Channel and Tierra del Fuego, connecting the cities of Ushuaia, Argentina and Punta Arenas, Chile.  Australis’ ships navigate through glaciers and fjords to reach Cape Horn where, weather permitting, passengers may go ashore to experience the beauty and remoteness of this island.
