News Analysis: Cunard's QM2 is Safe , Port Call in Nagasaki is Under EvaluationMarch 11, 2011 By: Susan Young
This morning Travel Agent spoke on the phone to Peter Shanks, president and CEO of Cunard Line, who was in his U.K. office, keeping a close eye on the situation in Japan. "Our thoughts are with Japan," Shanks said, expressing sorrow at how terrible the situation was for that nation and its citizens.
That said, he emphasized that Cunard's Queen Mary 2, which had a port call in Osaka, Japan yesterday, is now safely sailing 400 to 500 miles away from the Japanese Coast en route to Nagasaki, its next port call.
Shanks said Cunard has been in contact with the appropriate authorities throughout emergency and the situation has had "no impact" on QM2 or its guests onboard the ship.
It's unclear as yet, whether the situation in Japan will impact QM2's port call today in Nagasaki, Japan. Shanks says the line is waiting to find out if the port will be open and QM2 will be able to call there.
Representing another Carnival Corp. brand, Jennifer de la Cruz, a spokeswoman for Carnival Cruise Lines, which has several ships sailing on the West Coast of the U.S., told Travel Agent: "We have confirmed with our operations management that all ships are doing well with no impact expected although we are keeping a close eye on things as a precautionary measure."
