Royal Caribbean to Build New Cruise Terminal in Miami (VIDEO)

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has announced plans to build a new cruise terminal at PortMiami on land leased from Miami-Dade County. Royal Caribbean International will homeport ships out of the new terminal, including a ship in the line’s largest Oasis class.

The agreement between Royal Caribbean and Miami-Dade County will come before the Board of County Commissioners July 6.

Broadway Malyan will design the new terminal after winning a global competition between five architectural firms.

Nicknamed “The Crown of Miami,” the design of the 170,000 square foot terminal is meant to evoke a crown when viewed from the water, “M” for Miami when viewed from the eastern or western side, and waves when viewed from the terminal side. The terminal’s facade will be lit at night.

Also this year, Royal Caribbean plans to add a 20,000 square foot Innovation Lab to its corporate headquarters in PortMiami.

PortMiami currently welcomes 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers per year. Once the new terminal is completed, that number is expected to rise to 1.8 million.
