Fathom’s First Cuba Cruise Sets SailMay 2, 2016 By: Adam Leposa
Fathom’s inaugural cruise to Cuba is underway, the Miami Herald reports. Travelers onboard the 600-passenger Adonia departed Miami Sunday and are set to arrive in Havana Monday morning.
The cruise set sail following a recent change in Cuban government policy allowing Cuban-born Americans to travel to the country by sea. Previously, Cuban-born Americans had only been allowed to travel to the country by air. That policy prompted two Cuban-born passengers to sue Fathom and its parent company, Carnival Corporation, after they were denied a chance to book a Fathom cruise to Cuba. Fathom later announced that it would accept bookings from all passengers, regardless of their country of birth, and work with the Cuban government to get the policy changed — which it did in mid-April.
Fathom will offer seven-day Cuba itineraries calling at Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, as well as a lineup of cultural activities both onboard and ashore. Prices start from $1,800 per person, excluding Cuban visas, taxes, fees and port expenses and including all meals on the ship, onboard experiences and several on-the ground activities. Prices will vary by season. To secure a spot on future sailings, a $600 per person deposit is required for all cabin categories and occupancy levels. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure.
