The new South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas will expand in two phases to become one of the country’s largest gaming floors and one of the only casinos in the state with separate race and sports books. Opened in 2005, Michael Gaughan’s 2,200-room resort currently houses a spa, a bowling center, eight restaurants, showroom, an equestrian arena, a convention center, an exhibit hall and bingo.
The first additions, rolling out July 16, will include 400 slot, video poker and video keno machines, a race book, a poker room and a multi-function entertainment area called The Grandview Lounge. Then, a Steak ‘n Shake and a Japanese sushi-teppanyaki will be added.
The 175-seat race book will have Interactive Player Terminals, with which guests can make wagers from their seats. The 22-tabled poker room will host three daily tournaments, featuring varying buys and bounties: at 10 a.m. a $50 buy and $5 bounty; at 2 p.m., a $100 buy-in and $25 bounty and at 7 p.m. a $75 buy-in and a $5 bounty.
On Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17, any player who buys-in for $40 will get $50 in chips (limit) or $100 will get $110 (no-limit). During the first two weeks, all three will feature no “house drop.” In July, players will earn $2 per hour in comps. Over August, September and October, a $100,000 Freeroll Tournament will be featured.
Starting at 11 a.m., the opening will feature a Q&A with thoroughbred trainer Craig Dollase hosted by handicapper Ralph Siraco. Continuing, $10 entry handicapping contests on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th will take place, on which $5,000 in prize money must be won each day. Through the end of July, South Point Race players will earn double points. Enjoy complimentary cake and champagne from noon to midnight Friday and Saturday, and live music 5 to 9 p.m. in The Grandview Lounge. Featuring a bar and nightly entertainment, the 100-seat lounge will also play host to special events and viewing parties.
