The Alisal, a guest ranch and resort near Santa Barbara, California, might be a good option for those travelers who want a real rancher experience but still appreciate the finer things in life.
I learned all about it when representatives from the property, a working cattle ranch on 10,000 acres, stopped by our New York offices.
What to Expect: Activities cater to just about everyone, from active travelers to city slickers looking to get a taste of ranch life (think horseback riding and fishing). There are even boot camps, offered for couples, girlfriends, mothers and daughters, which give a hardcore look into life on a cattle ranch.
On the luxe side, each of the property’s 73 California ranch-style studio cottages and suites has a fireplace and the biggest draws are the aforementioned horseback riding and the spa, part of a newly built, 6,000-square-foot facility. Spa treatments include facials and massages and there is one couples’ treatment room.
Love Connection: The property has two 18-hole championship golf courses and our sources told us that Kevin Costner met his current wife while playing golf at The Alisal—she is the stepdaughter of the former resident golf pro.
