Bangkok Weathers Eight Explosions

The Tourism Authority of Thailand reports that Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom all have advised their citizens to reconsider travel to Bangkok in the wake of eight explosions that resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries in Bangkok on New Year's Eve. It adds that the military has elevated security in the capital by increasing troops on duty, and the country's Tourist Police have been deployed in force in all major tourist spots. The authority says its domestic offices reported that New Year's celebrations continued without incident, although countdown celebrations were canceled in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The authority also is having these offices provide it with updates that will be relayed to the authority's overseas offices. According to the authority, Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont says the blasts were the work of people who lost power, based on government information and information from intelligence agencies.
