Reports: Shots Fired Outside UK Parliament Building in London

Media outlets and eyewitnesses on social media are reporting that shots have been fired close to the Houses of Parliament in central London shortly after 2 p.m. local time.

In the latest update from the Washington Post, reports indicate that police shot an alleged assailant outside the Parliament compound. Additionally, a vehicle drove through pedestrians on a landmark bridge.

The London Metropolitan Police said that they were treating the attack as a terrorist incident until they know otherwise.

NBC News reports that at least 10 people were injured when the vehicle hit pedestrians on the Westminster Bridge before crashing into a railing. A police officer was also stabbed near the House of Commons.

Witnesses at the scene saw people being treated for wounds and a man with a knife in the grounds, the BBC reports. Staff inside the building have been told to remain in their offices.

Police were forced to close streets around the area of the Parliament building. The landmark, which offers tours to tourists, is located in Westminster in the center of London, near both the Westminster and Waterloo bridges, as well as the Golden Jubilee pedestrian bridges from the South Bank.

The building is also close to Westminster Abbey, and several blocks from St. James’s Park. Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery are several blocks to the north.
