Thailand: New Airport Will Open as Scheduled

Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport will begin full domestic and international operations as scheduled on September 28. That's the word from Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, president of the Administrative Reform Council and leader of the recent military coup. (The council was formed after the coup to ease the transition toward an interim government and new elections.) In addition, Somchai Sawasdeepon, general manager of the new airport, also confirmed that the opening will proceed according to schedule. The airport has been operating limited domestic and international flights since September 15. All international carriers are continuing flights to and from Thailand; Suvarnabhumi is operating under a high security alert.
