The Latin American Herald Tribune is reporting that the death toll in Dominica caused by Tropical Storm Erika is now 31. Emergency has also been declared in eight municipalities in Puerto Rico as a result of damages caused by the storm, according to the report.
According to Caribbean News Now, all Seaborne Airlines services into Dominica have been suspended effective immediately through September 16 as a result of damage inflicted on the airport by Tropical Storm Erika.
To accommodate passengers and all relief efforts to support Dominica, Seaborne Airlines will be substantially boosting scheduled passenger services into Point-a-Pitre on the island of Guadeloupe, according to the report. Caribbean News Now also reports that all passengers booked on Seaborne Airlines will be offered the opportunity to re-book their flights into Guadeloupe, or on existing schedule service to Fort-de-France, Martinique, at no expense. The islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique have regular ferry service to Dominica.
Besides the 31 confirmed deaths, 21 others, including two French nationals, continue to remain missing, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said in a televised statement Tuesday night.
The government has declared nine new areas as disaster zones due to torrential rain over the island nation, the Latin American Herald Tribune reports.
In Puerto Rico, Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla issued on Tuesday an executive order declaring an emergency in the municipalities of Maricao, Adjuntas, Jayuya, Yauco, Ponce, Utuado, Las Marias and Lares, as Erika unleashed heavy rainfall over the region, causing floods and landslides, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune report.
