Flash Floods Strike Kenya

March 5, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

Thursday, March 4, Kenya's Ewaso Nyiro River overflowed after heavy rains, sending massive flash floods across several parts of the country. The floods completely wiped out six tourist lodges, wildlife research camps and has left thousands of people huddled on roof tops and in trees.

As of now at least six people have been reported dead and dozens are missing. Red Cross officials are reporting that up to 100 houses still remain submurged in the Garbatula region of Eastern Province.

A senior police official told AFP that 550 tourists have been evacuated from 10 tourist lodges and hotels in the affected areas.

'These are tourists who were booked in hotels within Samburu and Isiolo, they are all safe because they have been moved out of hte hotels ot safety," he tells AFP. "They were airlifted to safety by helicopters."

Other affected regions include Tanzania and Somalia.
