Report: Egyptian Kidnappers Release U.S. Tourists

May 31, 2012

ABC News reports that kidnappers have released two American tourists who were taken in the Sinai Peninsula while driving north from Dahab, a resort town on the Red Sea.

The kidnappers were reportedly Bedouin tribesmen who demanded the release of another tribesman who had been arrested on Tuesday, May 29, 2012. The kidnapped tourists were held in Ras al-Shaytan, a mountainous area whose name translates as the “head of the devil.”

The Sinai area has become more dangerous since the ousting of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Kidnappings by Bedouin tribesman and gun and drug trafficking have become more frequent, and it is believed Al Qaeda has operations in the area.
