Europe's airlines have been striking (or threatening to strike) for months, and now the wave of industrial actions is affecting Europe's waterways. AFP is reporting that a strike by Channel ferry workers has entered its fourth day on Monday, with operator SeaFrance warning the loss of revenue over the busy Easter weekend could deal the company a crippling blow.
"The strike will continue until [Tuesday] unless there are negotiations and we are given what we want," said Didier Cappelle of the CFDT maritime union.
Workers at SeaFrance ferries walked off the job on Friday to protest the loss of a $135 bonus and inadequate staffing for the crossings from Calais to Dover.
The management of SeaFrance said that the company would lose well over $1 million because of the Easter weekend strike, and it could lead to the operator shutting down and the loss of all jobs. Union officials dispute those claims.
SeaFrance, a subsidiary of French railway operator SNCF, passed plans in December to cut 482 jobs from its 1,580-strong workforce in the face of strong opposition from unions. The company reportedly has lost millions in the past year.
