Encouraging Trends Seen for Trans-Atlantic Travel

August 30, 2010 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Courtesy of the European Travel Commission, here are some interesting stats about the recent U.S. market for travel to Europe.

The peak-season rise in overall trans-Atlantic traffic continued in July, with leading carriers reporting an average 3.7-percent increase. Average capacity was up 2.7 percent, the first significant increase in capacity this year (June was up 0.8 percent). The average load factor was at 88.5. Among the leading carriers, the Star Alliance members have accounted for virtually all of the additional summertime ASMs.

U.S. traffic to Europe continued to be soft in May, with visits down 0.7 percent, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Of course, that was much better than the 19.0-percent drop in April resulting from the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.
Two encouraging trends: Trans-Atlantic fares seem to be solidifying on the moderate side as fall approaches. The dollar was on the rise again in August, up nearly four eurocents (interbank rate).
