TourCrafters Offers Le Marche and Puglia

TourCrafters is offering two of Italy's emerging tourism destinations—Le Marche and Puglia. The two relatively untapped regions are being sold as part of the tour operator’s land-only Eastern Coast driving package. Pricing starts at $469 for nine days and eight nights and is valid until December 15. The program spends four nights in Le Marche, dubbed by many as the “next Tuscany.” Accommodations are in Casa Oliva, a medieval fortified village and palace in Bargni between Urbino and Pesaro. In Puglia, which is located in the “boot” of Italy, clients stay for four nights in Corte Altavilla, a collection of medieval houses that have been converted into a four-star hotel.

Madrid’s Prado museum has opened an exhibition of all the great names in Renaissance portraiture – Botticelli, Jan van Eyck, Dürer, Piero della Francesca, El Greco, Holbein, Lorenzo Lotto, Anthonis Mor, Pisanello, Raphael and Titian. Running through September 7, “The Renaissance Portrait: From Pisanello to Rubens,” will present 126 works – paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings and medals – most of which have never before been shown in Spain.

The program was organized with the National Gallery of London, where a different version will be presented in October.

Silverjet Suspends Operations

First MAXjet, then EOS, now Silverjet. The all business-class carrier has become the third to cease operations after a key funding deal did not come through as expected. Silverjet operated service to Newark, NJ, and Dubai from its base at London's Luton Airport. A statement from Silverjet says that the airline is still in discussions for funding but that nothing had materialized yet. Its last flight departed Dubai Friday morning.

The carrier was expecting to receive $25.1 million from investor Viceroy Holdings, $5 million of which was supposed to be received on May 2, but never came through.

MAXjet Airways was the first such business-only carrier to fold last year after running out of money; EOS, which operated between London and New York, fell to the same fate just last month.

More than a dozen carriers have collapsed in the past six months largely due to the staggering price of oil, which has contributed to the industry possibly reporting $40 billion in combined losses this year, more than three times the level after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, says
independent airline analyst Chris Tarry, in a Bloomberg story.
