Earlier this month, cruise line representatives, CLIA and a variety of major ports and destinations attended the first ever Regional Dialogue for the Baltic, organized by the EU Commission.

The one day Baltic workshop, held at the Scandic Copenhagen, focused on cruise tourism following the launch of the first Pan-European cruise dialogue at a conference in Brussels in March 2015. The workshop held the framework of action three of the European Strategy for more Growth and Jobs in Coastal and Marine Tourism.

The workshop featured three round table discussions on the promotion of cruise tourism in the Baltic and how to guarantee integrated cruise tourism offers in destinations and destination promotion; sustainable destination management and the cruise tourism impact on local communities, as well as the integration of ports with port cities; and the promotion of environmental sustainability of cruise tourism in the Baltic by practice sharing.

Speakers at the workshop included Christos Economou from the EU Commission and Claus Bodker, Director of Cruise Baltic, who discussed how the Baltic Sea generates 1.4 billion euros in direct revenues and how the cruise industry generates no less than 12,000 jobs in the region.

Since October 2015 when the first regional Mediterranean dialogue took place in Italy, The Baltic plans to continue this approach in fostering solutions for cruise tourism at a regional level, bringing stakeholders closer together in their efforts for a more sustainable and competitive Baltic sector.
