Sandals Nixes Energy Surcharge

December 13, 2007 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

Sandals Resorts has reversed its position on an energy surcharge to Jamaican room rates. After the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association gave its members the go-ahead to levy a surcharge on guests to help offset rising fuel costs, Sandals planned to institute a surcharge of $4 per person per night (up to $8 per room per night) at all of its Jamaica properties. But the week after the surcharge was announced, and before it was ever implemented, Sandals canceled the charge. "No one disputes the very real challenge of meeting escalating energy costs," Gordon "Butch" Stewart, chairman of Sandals Resorts, said in a statement, "but we respect and highly value the opinion of our travel partners who are on the consumer frontlines. We always want to do what is in their best interest and therefore after much discussion with them, we feel that now is not the time to enact this new policy." (JP)
