Tour Ops Split on Currency Surcharge

January 11, 2008 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

Following the implementation of fuel surcharges by many cruise lines, tour operators may now consider similar actions to cover their increased expenses. At least one major operator is reportedly implementing a currency surcharge on its Europe tours, while others have announced they will abide by published 2008 rates. "We will not surcharge any clients on our European vacations," said John Galvin, chief financial officer of Collette Vacations. Galvin said that Collette's usual financial strategy mitigates the effects of currency exchange fluctuations. Earlier this week, Globus said it would implement such a charge on 85 percent of its Europe tours, ranging from $20 to $190 per person on 2008 trips booked after January 16, according to reports.
