January 7, 2008 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

Security, maintenance, administration and other union staff at Heathrow, Gatwick and other British airports called off strikes planned for January 7, 14 and 17. Separate strikes planned by Virgin Atlantic cabin crew for January 9, 10, 16 and 17 that would have affected U.S. flights also have been canceled. reports that the airport strike was canceled after the union and management of BAA, which operates airports in England and Scotland, reached a resolution over pension plans.

Earlier this week, Virgin and its cabin crew came to terms in a dispute over raises. Employees had sought a 5 percent annual pay increase, versus Virgin’s proposed 8.3 percent increase over two years and Lyell Strambi, COO of Virgin Atlantic, had said, “There will be no eleventh-hour offer.” A Virgin strike would have forced flight cancellations at London, New York, Boston, Chicago and Nairobi.
