JFK Flights Delayed Due To Turtle Interference

July 9, 2009 By: Meagan Drillinger

Flight delayed on account of....turtles? Apparently so. Wednesday morning, after taking off at 9:19 a.m. from John F. Kennedy airport, the pilot of a departing plane reported to air controllers that he had run over some turtles, reports the New York Post.

This caused a 35 minute delay while wildlife control workers removed 78 diamondback turtles from the runway. This led to a series of flight delays lasting up to an hour and a half.

Port Authority spokesman John Kelly explained that while this occurrence is rare, it has happened before. And this time of year is turtle mating season and this year's dating pool just happened to be camped out on a JFK runway.
