Reports: LAN Airlines and TAM to Combine Operations

Several media outlets are reporting that LAN Airlines and TAM are discussing a merger to create a mega-Latin America airline company.

JPMorgan.com is reporting that the company, which would be the largest regional airline, would be called LATAM Airline Group.

Exame, a Brazilian business magazine, first reported the potential merger between the Brazilian and Chilean carriers on Friday. Reuters later reported that TAM had filed a regulatory filing Friday confirming a preliminary merger accord, with the airline going so far as to say the new company's name would be "Latam Airlines Group." The news service said LAN had also confirmed a merger agreement, though the company said the deal is nonbinding.

The definitive agreement, according to JPMorgan.com, should be signed within two to three months, while a transaction is likely to close six to nine months later.
