Air France Strike May Continue into Next Week

The pilots' strike at Air France went into its fifth day as the company and unions continued negotiating cost cuts. Reuters reports that pilots have given notice that they may extend their strike until next Friday.

According to website France24, Friday saw a "slight improvement" in services, with the airline operating 45 percent of scheduled flights. The airline has announced this percentage as a "minimum service," even as the pilots announced the extension of the action.

Air France-KLM Chief Executive Alexandre de Juniac said Thursday that pilots and management were preparing for a new round of negotiations.

The walkout began on Monday and has forced the carrier to cancel close to three-fifths of flights. According to Reuters, the strike is reportedly costing the airline between $13-19 million per day, which threatens to wipe out the 78 million euros in pre-tax profit that analysts had on average expected Air France-KLM to make this year.
