France's Rail Unions Call Weekend Strike

December 9, 2009 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Railway travelers in France could face disruption over the weekend as rail unions have called a national protest and a separate 24-hour strike, The Connexion is reporting.

Today’s protest in Paris will highlight concerns of three drivers unions—CGT, UNSA and CFDT—over changes planned to open up SNCF to competition. Unions say the changes will mean job cuts, poorer working conditions, reorganisation of services and restructuring of staffing.

The CFDT has warned of local strike action starting from Friday lunchtime as negotiations start in the regions. The CGT and Sud-rail have also called for a 24-hour strike from the evening of December 12.

Information on services should be available from the Gares en Mouvement website, which has live departure board information across France.
