The Country Club Course at Sandy Lane, Barbados hosted a new Guinness World Record last week when pro golfer Alexander Sandeman set a new record with the most birdies in 12 hours, sinking 40 birdies in that time.

In addition to setting a new Guinness World Record, Sandeman’s efforts also helped to raise funds for the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, which benefits Barbados’ Sunshine Village, a complex of seven purpose-built treatment centers, each dedicated to a different children’s charity.

Sandeman, a pro golfer who now resides in Barbados, first played Sandy Lane’s golf course at the age of 10. While he did not play competitive golf from 2006 to the beginning of 2009 due to a hand injury, he realized in March of last year that there was no previous record for most birdies in a day and sent a proposal into Guinness World Records to recommend the new category.

Sandeman dedicated the end of 2009 to training for the feat. Two officials from the Barbados Golf Association were on hand during his 12-hour session, as was a cameraman to record his achievement.

Sandy Lane offers golfers of all skill levels with 45 holes of golf on three impressive courses: The Country Club Course and The Green Monkey, both designed by Tom Fazio, and the Old Nine golf course. The Old Nine Course is intimate yet challenging, as it winds its way magically through the old estate. The 18-hole Country Club Course is designed by Tom Fazio as his first course outside of the U.S., and features five lakes and open fairways with angled slopes.

Tom Fazio also created a masterpiece with Sandy Lane’s third course, The Green Monkey, which is carved out of a former quarry with dramatic elevation changes and views of the Caribbean Sea. The course is named after its namesake, the Bajan Green Monkey and aptly features a bunker with a grass island carved in the shape of a monkey.
