Republicans Propose Port Compromise

March 7, 2006 By: Susan Young Travel Agent

Two Republican lawmakers have submitted compromises to the Bush Administration to try and end the public dispute over port security. Both lawmakers, Sen. Susan Collins from Maine who is chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Rep. Peter King, who holds a similar post in the U.S. House of Representatives, both said they are waiting to hear back from the White House, which said Monday that efforts to move the deal forward were continuing. Dubai World Port's purchase of P&O, the British company that now manages cargo and passenger terminals at the ports on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, has created strong opposition in the halls of Congress. Under the new proposals, DP World would still receive profits but would not have any access to security information. Instead, an American company would control actual port work and access to everything else. Dubai Ports would still be the contractor and reap the profits.
