UK Issues Terror Travel Warning

The United Kingdom's Foreign Office reports it has updated its travel advice pages to reflect a heightened threat of terrorism globally.

"There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time," the warning says.

This change was made to travel advice globally in response to the generalized threat, the UK said. The government added that it will continue to reflect any specific credible threats in travel advice.

The government  noted it regularly reviews and updates its travel advice to make sure it provides the most up to date information and advice for British nationals.

"Given coalition action in Syria and Iraq and the threat to countries involved, we have decided today to update our travel advice to reflect this," the government said.

UK residents make around 55 million trips abroad annually the UK said. Most trips are trouble-free.

"We know our travel advice can have a knock-on effect on trade and political considerations, but we don’t let this influence the advice we give. The safety of British nationals is our main concern," the government said in a statement.

"We sometimes advise against all travel or all but essential travel to a particular place. In cases of non-terrorist threats like coups, civil unrest or natural disasters we will advise against travel only when we consider the risk to British nationals is unacceptably high," the UK said.

"In the case of terrorism we will only advise against travel in situations of extreme and imminent danger, where the threat is sufficiently specific, large-scale or endemic to affect British nationals severely," the UK said.
