Giveback Getaways at The Ritz-Carlton, Key BiscayneMarch 20, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor
Guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne can literally leave a footprint on the island’s Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. On the second Tuesday of every month, up to 12 guests will join the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne to assist the park rangers in an extensive plant restoration project that rids the island of non-native plants and replants species indigenous to area. Summertime focuses on replanting and the remaining months focus on uprooting the invasive species. While guests are working, the park rangers interweave information about Key Biscayne’s history (Tequesta Indian villages, Ponce de Leon’s arrival, Seminole Indian attack, watch for German U-boats during World War II, etc.), so the program not only attracts guests who are environmentally conscious, but also those who have an affinity for history. While Miami is considered a relatively new city, many are surprised to learn that Key Biscayne was at the center of several influential events, both locally and nationally. By restoring the natural fauna to the area, guests are, in fact, helping maintain the island’s sense of history. Following their hard work, guests will be treated to a tour of the landmark Cape Florida lighthouse, where they will ascend its 109 steps and enjoy views of the beach, Miami and Biscayne Bay from the top and then tour the old Keeper's Quarters.
