KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced recently a partnership with AltAir and SkyNRG for the supply of sustainable biofuel on all flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

For a three-year period, local biofuel refinery AltAir Fuels will produce the biofuel which will be supplied for the flights by SkyNRG. Thanks to KLM’s deal, Los Angeles has become the world’s second airport that has incorporated biofuel into its regular refueling process. The first airport, in Oslo, Norway, began the process in March of 2016, which was also headed by KLM.
The KLM Corporate Biofuel Program enables businesses to ensure that sustainable biofuel is used for a portion of their air travel. Participants in the program pay a surcharge to cover the difference in price between sustainable biofuel and regular kerosene. Despite the price increase, businesses have been participating in the program to help set good examples and to actively help make air transport more sustainable. Partners of the KLM Corporate BioFuel Program include ABN, AMRO, Accenture, CBRE Global Investors, FMO, FrieslandCampina, Amsterdam Municipality, Heineken, Loyens & Loeff, PGGM, Perfetti Van Melle and the Schiphol Group.
The biofuel process begins the same as any refueling process. The biofuel is pumped directly into the airport fuel reservoirs, which also hold the airport’s conventional kerosene supply, which implies it will be delivered into all aircrafts refueling in Los Angeles. Together, with its partners in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme, KLM buys sustainable biofuel in Los Angeles and can therefore assign the reduction in CO2 emissions to all KLM flights departing from the airport. These biofuel flights are contributing to KLM’s goal of achieving a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger by 2020 (compared to 2011).
