The Nines Seeks LEED Silver Certification

April 2, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor

The Nines, a Starwood Luxury Collection hotel, which opened in October in the historic Meier & Frank building in downtown Portland, OR, is aiming for LEED Silver certification. Every detail of the Nines is eco-friendly, including the artwork, paints, plumbing and limited outdoor lighting. Here are some examples of what all they’ve done:

  • All guest bathrooms are outfitted with dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets for an anticipated savings of 750,000 gallons of water each year.

  • The hotel draws from 100% renewable energy – including wind-power and carbon offsets.

  • In an effort to encourage guests and employees to choose alternative transportation, bike storage and easy access to public transportation are available.

  • 90 percent of the 24 million pounds of material removed during the building’s renovation was recycled and diverted from landfills.

  • The hotel’s setting in the historic Meier & Frank building counts toward certification, earning credit for reuse and for maintaining at least 75 percent of the building’s shell.

  • All housekeeping products are Green Seal certified.
