San Diego "Going Green" with New HotelJuly 15, 2009 By: Lindsey Boyle
It is no surprise that many around the world are taking the "go green" phrase into their own hands. Hotel Indigo has opened its first LEED-certified property (one of only 19 in the U.S.) in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter with an eco-savvy green roof on the Meditation Deck, Herb Garden.
A flagship property, the hotel is owned by Intercontinental Hotels Group, the world's largest hotel group by number of rooms. The 12-story hotel is dedicated eco-friendly standards as numerous sustainable practices were incorporated for the success of the hotel's mission.
"From the rooftop down, Hotel Indigo is a model of sustainability, and we're delighted to debut the brand's first green hotel in San Diego," said Janis Cannon, vice president of global brand management.
Another first for the city of San Diego, Hotel Indigo is topped with green roofs on the ninth and 12th floors, which will reduce energy consumption by cutting the need for heating/air conditioning. The hotel has a Phi Terrace Bar and meditation deck which is the world's first installation of MoistureShield composite decking, made from recycled polyethylene plastic and recycled wood fibers.
Additional green elements included in the opening of the hotel are:
* Terrace herb garden for use at Phi Bar and Bistro
* Operable floor-to-ceiling windows for natural lighting/ventilation
* On-site recycling program
* Composting of organic matter
* Reserved parking spaces/parking discounts for guests with low-emitting/fuel-efficient vehicles.
