Melbourne is riding high with new attractions on the horizon and expansions to existing ones.

The popular Melbourne Aquarium is embarking on an $18 million expansion that is set to revitalize the northern bank of the Yarra River. The new Antarctic King and Gentoo penguin exhibit opening in late 2008 will utilize cutting edge technology to recreate a snowy winter wonderland experience.

The Southern Star Observation Wheel at Waterfront City in Melbourne’s Docklands will feature 21 air-conditioned and enclosed glass cabins offering views of Melbourne and beyond. Somewhat similar in design to the London Eye in the UK, the Southern Star is expected to open to the public before Christmas 2008.

A revitalized Hepburn Mineral Springs Bathhouse is set to reopen in late 2008. Since the original bathhouse was built in 1895, “taking the waters” has been a focal point of a visit to the region. The $8.5 million redevelopment project will reinforce the reputation of Daylesford-Hepburn Springs as the Spa Capital of Australia.
