Hawaii Island Passenger Submarine Company Gets New General ManagerMarch 14, 2012 By: Jena Tesse Fox
Atlantis Adventures recently announced that Doug Fry, who has 22 years of management experience with the company, has been named general manager of its Kona submarine tour operations on Hawaii Island.
Fry, who previously worked for Atlantis from 1985 to 2007, takes over the position formerly held by longtime Kona resident Mike Stanton, who retired from the company in February after 19 years.
Fry first joined Atlantis in 1985 and was part of the original assembly team of the first Atlantis submarine in Vancouver, British Columbia before helping to launch the company’s tour operations at Grand Cayman (1985), St. Thomas (1986), and Guam (1988).
Atlantis Submarines operates its Kona tour in scenic Kailua Bay. Battery powered and emitting no pollutants into the ocean, the 65-foot, 48-passenger submarine quietly descends to depths of more than 100 feet for an up-close view of fish and marine life.
Other highlights of the tour include a 25-acre coral reef garden formed over ancient lava flows and two sunken shipwrecks that have been naturally transformed into artificial reefs. The submarine’s interior is air-conditioned and offers a large viewing portal for each seat along with plenty of head and legroom.
Atlantis’ environmentally friendly tour operations in Kailua Bay contributed to the company being recognized as a Certified Ecotour Operator with the highest designation of Gold status by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association in 2011.
