Hawaiian Resort Shares Aquatic Culture & Heritage with GuestsAugust 18, 2009 By: Jena Tesse Fox
In a nod to its oceanfront setting at the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, Kona Village and Hualalai Resort have developed a water-themed program called Alaka'i Nalu. (Alaka'i Nalu means "ambassadors of the waves" in the Hawaiian language.)
Alaka'i Nalu offerings at Kahuwai Bay include an Outrigger Canoe Program that lets guests paddle Hawaiian-style. Alaka'i crew share the historical significance of canoes in context to the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. After a lesson on a six-man canoe, guests are able to use one and two-man outrigger canoes complimentary for the remainder of their stay.
Other Alaka'i Nalu activities include Wiwo'ole Ribcraft Adventures for seasonal whale watching or cruises to hidden snorkeling sites. Scooters (dive propulsion vehicles), standup paddleboards, spear fishing and deep-sea fishing are offered. As a PADI certified resort, SCUBA dives, instruction and certification programs add to the many offerings at this oceanfront location on the Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaii's Big Island.
The Junior Alaka'i Nalu program is a three-day program that may include standup paddleboards, windsurfing, free diving, zodiac boat captain, outrigger canoe paddling, sailing, scooter snorkeling, scuba diving and shoreline fishing. The program is exclusively tailored for ages 13 to 17 and includes three, five-hour sessions.
Among complimentary water activities offered at Kona Village, snorkeling in the pristine waters of Kahuwai Bay is the most popular. But there are also boogie boards, keiki (children) surfboards, kayaks and keiki fishing poles for catch-and-release fun on the edge of the resort's ancient Hawaiian fishponds.
Guests who book a new reservation* at Kona Village by September 15 for stays before December 18 can receive complimentary Standup Paddleboard lesson and use during your stay. There is some availability for Kona Village's thatched-roof bungalows over the popular Thanksgiving holiday season and the minimum night restriction has been waived.
