Orbitz for Agents to Pay Travel Agents Commissions

February 17, 2010 By: George Dooley

Orbitz is launching a groundbreaking program that offers travel agents the opportunity to earn commissions on hotel reservations and customized travel package bookings made on behalf of their customers using the Orbitz for Agents website.

The Orbitz for Agents program gives travel agents a broad range of hotel options around the world, including promotional rates on thousands of properties. The Orbitz for Agents program also allows travel agents to create customized travel packages (e.g. flight+hotel, flight+hotel+car, hotel+car) that can bring customers significant additional savings.

“By pricing the airline ticket and hotel room as a package, Orbitz for Agents is able to give customers access to highly discounted rates on airline tickets, hotel rooms and car rentals that airlines, hotels and car rental companies would not allow us to offer for booking separately,” Orbitz says.

"Orbitz for Agents is an easy to use solution for travel agents to book hotels and customized travel packages while earning extremely competitive commissions," said Ronnie Gurion, president, Orbitz Worldwide Distribution. "Orbitz for Agents also gives travel agents the ability to set and charge service fees on a transaction by transaction basis."

Standard commission rates include 10 percent for hotel reservations and 4 percent for travel package bookings. The first 500 travel agents to sign up and make their first booking on www.orbitzforagents.com by March 15, 2010 will earn higher commissions on hotel and travel packages through March 31, 2011. Promotional terms include 12 percent for hotel reservations and 5 percent for travel package bookings.

Commission percentages are based on gross booking amounts, excluding taxes and fees. All travel package bookings must include a hotel component. Additional terms are available on www.orbitzforagents.com.

Since launching its website to the general public in June 2001, Orbitz.com has become one of the largest online travel sites in the world and has launched innovations including Flight Price Assurance, Hotel Price Assurance and Total Price hotel search results. On Orbitz.com consumers can search more than 80,000 suppliers worldwide including airlines, hotels and car rental companies. Orbitz.com is owned by Orbitz Worldwide.

What's your opinion on this? Is this a new opportunity for agents? Some may say so but we've already seen one fan of our Facebook page say she has "better resources."

I agree with the other agent. I have better resources to use that will back me up and give great customer service. The package commissions they are offering are way lower than average; so why would I even be tempted?

Orbitz will want to live up to it's brand - so it's all up to us to insist and hold their toes to the fire to perform.@@@@@@@@@@@@Below market commissions are never a strong magnet - so they will either raise them or be another good idea that dies on the vine. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@Their intent is to succeed and be a powerhouse - it's up to them to be our choice resource.

Talk about feeding the hand that bites you. Don't understand agents that would support Orbitz (or for that matter a Delta Vacations where DL is doing NOTHING for us!)Support the tour operators that still provide service to the agent community.

I agree with Cook. Support the tour operators that really support the travel agency community.

Groundbreaking? Hardly. 5% commission on travel package bookings? Yikes. What exactly does "Orbitz for Agents" bring to the table that suppliers (like me) do not already? @@@@@@@@@@@@Yankee Holidays, and many other operators like us, have supported agencies with marketing dollars and ideas, offer similar product at similar pricing, pay a much higher commission, and actually appreciate the partnership between supplier and agency. Any bonafide agency already has a long list of trusted preferred suppliers that have been filling this need for years. How is this program any different than what we do already for our agency partners?@@@@@@@@@@@@Paul O'Meara@@@@@@VP, Sales & Marketing@@@@@@Yankee Holidays & Amtrak Vacations@@@@@@@@@@@@PROUD preferred supplier of American Express, Virtuoso, Vacation.com and WESTA

So first the airlines cut off the travel agents, then get together and start Orbitz, now that they are coughing up blood, they want our help. Here's a bucket and a towel.

I don't trust Orbitz not to steal clients and would be wary to entrust them with our clients $$

How many of us have had to clean up a mess made by/on Orbitz? Who would our clients call when there is a mix up, flight cancellation, disaster, etc? No thanks!!! This business is tough enough without adding that headache. We stick with the tride and true and explain why to our customers. It is well worth the extra dollars.

Why would any self respecting agent want to partner with an online company that would just as soon put them out of business? Why would an intellegent agent work for 5% commission and help the online company that would like to bury the travel agent community succeed?

I'm going to register just to see if I can put together a package and post it to my blog... -IF- I can post pre-packaged trips to my popular locations that are 0 hassle it might be worthwhile.
