Travel Show Draws Crowds to Javits Center

February 10, 2009 By: Michael Browne

Nearly 500 travel and destination exhibitors were at the three-day New York Times Travel Show at the Javits Convention Center in New York, which opened last Friday with special hours for the industry and media.

The Caribbean pavilion looked to be by far the most heavily trafficked, with a noticeable trend toward eco-travel and cultural experiences. Also, in response to the economy, domestic travel exhibits seemed to be popular this year, with booths representing every tourist destination in the U.S., from Colonial Williamsburg to glitzy Las Vegas. Other destinations were promoting health and wellness, with representatives at the Philippines booth offering relaxing massages. There was also quite a bit of entertainment, with music from Jamaica, and native dancers from Aruba.

Over the weekend the show was open to consumers, some 25,000 of whom filed in to the show floor looking for new destinations and deals, as well as attending speaking sessions with such travel industry notables as Arthur and Pauline Frommer, Travel Channel host Samantha Brown and radio host Stephanie Abrams.
