Extra! Extra! Marriott To Begin Newspaper Preference Program

April 13, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor

Marriott International Inc. said Monday that some hotel guests will receive their preferred newspaper at their rooms starting in June in an effort to deal with waning newspaper demand.

According to a report in the Associated Press, the hotel operator said guest demand for newspaper delivery at more than 2,600 U.S. hotels has dropped by approximately 25 percent.

To contend with the declining demand and to minimize waste, the hotel operator said guests will choose whether they would like to receive USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, a local paper or no paper. Marriot Reward members can update their online profiles with their newspaper preference, with remaining guests asked their preference upon check-in.

Hotels participating in the program include Marriott Hotels & Resorts, JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts and Renaissance Hotels & Resorts.

Hotels such as Courtyard, Fairfield Inn, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites hotels will provide free newspapers in their lobbies beginning April 20.

The newspaper preference program is targeted to cut newspaper distribution by about 50,000 papers a day, or 18 million papers a year.
