Historic Greenbrier Up for Sale

March 16, 2009 By: Michael Browne

The famed Greenbrier Resort, a West Virginia landmark where U.S. presidents vacationed and celebrities gathered for years, is now up for sale. The owner, railroad giant CSX Inc., says it has lost millions of dollars on the property during the past several years and has hired the Goldman Sachs investment firm to evaluate the property.

Although no potential buyers have been named, insiders have speculated that everyone from Marriott to Ritz-Carlton to Trump could be in the running.

Greenbrier spokeswoman Lynn Swann said Goldman Sachs' strategic review is ongoing and declined to comment on any possible interest from buyers.

"All options remain on the table and no final decision has been made," Swann told the Charleston (WV) Gazette.

CSX has said the resort lost $35 million last year, struggling with cancellations and a labor dispute.

The Greenbrier, in West Sulphur Springs, was built in 1778 and currently offers 721 rooms, including 33 suites and 96 guest and estate houses. Guests enjoy more than 50 recreational activities including three championship golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a 40,000-square-foot spa.
