India Airport Opens Monster Terminal

July 7, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

Indira Gandhi international airport in Delhi has just opened the country's largest public building, a $3 billion terminal, reports The Guardian. The terminal opened after a series of religious ceremonies including 300 priests.

How big is big? The building is expected to handle 34 million passengers a year, starting with the first arrival from New York in just a few days. This is just in time for the Commonwealth Games which will be held in Delhi in October. India is also expected to complete other construction projects by that time, according to The Guardian.

"The nine-level terminal is equipped with the largest car park in India, accommodating 4,300 cars, and its own metro line. There are more than four miles of conveyor belts, and bridges to accommodate the giant double-decker Airbus A380 planes," writes The Guardian.
