Northern Italy Struck by Second Earthquake

May 29, 2012 By: Newswire , Jena Tesse Fox

A little more than week after an earthquake struck northern Italy, another one has impacted the Emilia region, killing at least 10 people and burying several others under rubble, the BBC and other sources are reporting.

All the deaths were in the Modena area. Three were killed when an industrial shed collapsed in Medolla. Three also died in San Felice, two in Mirandola and one in Cavezzo. Milan and Bologna were also impacted. Many historic buildings in Cavezzo are now ruined, and there are reports that the roof of a church damaged by the earlier quake collapsed on Tuesday.

Tuesday's tremor, estimated at magnitude 5.8, hit the same region where a quake 10 days ago killed seven people and destroyed many buildings.

Although the quakes are certainly serious, they do not seem to be impacting travel to Italy. Kier Matthews of Europe Express says that he has not heard of any cancellations, and Gianni Miradoli of Central Holidays reported the same. "The area where the earthquakes occurred is a very, very limited area," he explained. "They were concentrated in an area that is outside of our regular tours. So the earthquake did not effect our tours, and as far as I can see, there have been no cancellations." Diana Ferro of Perillo Tours says that the earthquakes haven't affected the company's Italy sales at all. In fact, she notes, the phone calls they're receiving from clients are to confirm that the trips are still on.

Stay tuned to for updates.
