Department of State Reissues Travel Alert for JapanMarch 14, 2011 By: Meagan Drillinger
The Department of State has updated its travel alert for U.S. citizens traveling to/in Japan. The current Travel Alert urges citizens to avoid all travel to Japan at this time, due to planned power outages, the evacuation of areas near nuclear power facilities in Fukushima and the likelihood of further aftershocks and tsunamis.
Forbes is reporting that Tokyo Disneyland will be closed for 10 days as the country cleans up from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit last Friday, March 11.
On the other hand, flights have resumed at all airports that were temporarily closed, except Sendai, Sado Iwate-Hanamaki and Misawa Airports. Most public transportation is up and running in the Tokyo area and northern Japan, as well.
In terms of the nuclear situation, the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency is recommending that people who are within 12.5 miles of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Okumacho evacuate immediately. The situation is still considered serious. For more information on the nuclear facilities, visit www.nisa.meti.go.jp/english.
