Typhoon Vongfong to Hit Mainland Japan on Sunday

October 10, 2014

Typhoon Vongfong is charting a course for mainland Japan. The dangerous storm is working its way through the western Pacific, just east of Taiwan and is headed toward the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan, according to AccuWeather.

Vongfong has brought flooding rainfall and damaging wind with gusts over 55 miles per hour. Some weakening has brought the strength of the storm down to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, but it is still a dangerous threat. "While some uncertainty still remains in the exact path of the powerful typhoon, confidence is becoming increasingly high in that the powerful cyclone will track very close or over Okinawa Saturday night, before making landfall in mainland Japan by early next week," the article reports.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, all fights to Okinawa have been canceled. The organization anticipates the typhoon getting close to southern Kyushu on Monday, and major parts of Honshu on Tuesday, but they are not sure how much it will affect infrastructure.

The northern Ryukyu Islands are already beginning to feel the effects, with winds at 80 miles per hours. The worst impacts across mainland Japan are expected to fall from late Sunday through Tuesday.
