Bringing an end to an "elaborate pyramid scheme," California’s Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today said it had completed an agreement forcing YTB International to stop the “deceptive marketing of its largely unprofitable travel websites” and hit YTB with $1 million in penalties.
"YTB falsely promised customers they could get rich quick by selling travel online," Brown said. "In reality, customers were reeled into an elaborate pyramid scheme and most never earned a dime. Today's settlement ends YTB's pyramid scheme by arming consumers with hard facts and eliminating the need to sign up for this largely unprofitable website."
Today's stipulated judgment, filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, accomplishes this, Brown said. The judgment includes:
* Requiring YTB to pay $1 million in penalties, costs, and restitution to California victims who filed complaints against YTB
* Prohibiting false and deceptive marketing
* Requiring that YTB provide consumers with information in a clear and conspicuous manner about how difficult it is to make money by selling travel through YTB
* Prohibiting the company from charging nearly $500 to recruit others into the scheme and requiring that new member recruitment be done using a free online demonstration
* Limiting income from "downstream sellers" (e.g., people who have been recruited and who have become recruiters themselves)
* Eliminating perks and other incentives for joining
* Making it easier to quit.
In August 2008, Brown filed suit against YTB (also known as yourtravelbiz.com), its affiliates, and founders to end the pyramid scheme and stop YTB's false and misleading marketing campaign.
YTB lured consumers into its travel business with false promises of wealth and deceptive marketing, Brown said. YTB charged customers $449.95 for the purchase of a website, and $49.95 a month to operate it. In total, consumers paid YTB over $1,000 in the first year of operation.
Brown said that many signed up to sell travel or to obtain travel discounts, but they quickly found it virtually impossible to make money selling travel. A plane ticket from Los Angeles to New York, for instance, would only yield $3 in profit. An international ticket from San Francisco to London would net only $6 in profit.
“In 2007, the annual median income for those selling travel was $39.00, less than one month's cost to operate the website," Brown said. "The majority of consumers who purchased YTB websites made no money through the sale of travel, and many lost money through continued website operations. By contrast, recruiting others to purchase websites, and having those purchasers recruit others to purchase websites (and so on), was much more profitable. Members earned money based on how many websites they sold, as well as how many websites those they recruited sold. These multi-level sales, combined with the required purchase of the $449.95 website, formed the foundation of YTB's pyramid scheme.”
The agreement requires YTB to open up its operations to scrutiny by the Attorney General's Office. The Attorney General's Office will have access to all YTB marketing materials, events, meetings, gatherings and presentations to ensure the company is complying with the agreement and California law. YTB will also register as a franchise with the California Department of Corporations as required by law.
In filings with the SEC since Brown's 2008 lawsuit, YTB stated that there is "substantial doubt about the Company's ability to continue as a going concern." Also, it revealed that, in 2008 and the first quarter of 2009, YTB has lost $5.9 million from its operations. The number of Internet websites sold decreased 75 percent in first quarter 2009 compared to first quarter 2008, and the total number of website owners decreased 53 percent in first quarter 2009 compared to first quarter 2008.

It's hard being at the TOP. Everybody takes a shot at you. If you need to grow your business putting down another business, then you do not have faith in the validity of your Business. Did we not learn anything from President Bush Campaign? He Ran a Smear campaign and spent most of his time talking about President Obama instead of the Issues and the race wasn’t close. I've been in YTB a couple of years. And just like any other business. If you don't do anything you won't make anything. The expectation in any Business you are in is the same and if you don't recognize that you will fail. Before you make judgments find out the facts about the opportunity. And make your own decision. You need to rewrite this article. Your wrong on many points. We are still in business and doing quiet well. Its a shame we live in a country where people try to smere others names and businesses. You people need help and to get down on your knees and ask God for forgiveness.
I paid my $499 plus $39 per month and never got a penny from them even though I made a few reservations. Furthermore, one client lost the cost of a ticket because he kept trying for over 5 days to reach customer service which eventually turned out to be a lady with a thick accent in India and she did not know how to solve theproblem and they kept bouncing him around and that turned me off even more. I would like to recover my money for it is a bit scam.

There is no thing on earth get quick rich but only through hard work. And with YTB you have to be a hard worker, nothing comes automatically and you need to give it time. Yes it cost money to start a business so does YTB but only the ones that truly work do get the reward of freedom and wealth in this line of biz.
Travel is a 7 Trillion dollar business and still growing, bigger than telecommunications.
If you think that level 1 director is the top than you have miss it because in YTB you don't think of yourself but of others to get to the top.
Your selfish if you think how can I become rich without helping others first.
You only get in this type of biz if you want to make a differents in other peoples life, don't do this out of any other reason, some that are doing this business with dollar signs in their eyes they think later of pyramid shemes. And think of it, don't all great companies have bad and good reports look at MicroSoft one of the most suit companies in the USA.
I have been in YTB for the past 17 months and have not seen or heard of any deceptive practices mentioned in your piece above. The truth is YTB has always stressed that with hard work one will be rewarded. YTB has a different business model and if there is sincerity, an objective review will result in a positive outcome. Watch out for YTB 2.0, we will keep on doing what is right.
YTB IS STILL UP AND RUNNING. YOU CAN'T KEEP A GOOD COMPANY DOWN. BOOKING TRAVEL AND BRING FUN AND EXCITEMENT BACK TO THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY.
At Last! I am broke because of this YTB International Pyramid. You don't sell travel or business; you sell FALSE DREAMS to people. It's hard to write this when you stupidly fall in love with a company that train people to recruit with lies. YTB stands for YOUR TROUBLE BUSINESS. If you still in that company it's time for you to run away from it.
Rodil-Former YTB Director Level 1
I have been with YTB since November 2007. I was never ever so STUPID to read a business plan and see 'get rich quick' there. For all you Nay sayers who think those of us that are RTA's don't focus on travel - you're dead wrong! You're ignorant. I work hard I make money - I slack and sit on my butt I don't. It's a business. I will stay strong with YTB because they have not failed me nor have they promised more than they could provide. I study, sell, and love the travel business. For those who obviously can't deal with competition you've been under a rock. It's what makes this country great!
Elaine - yes, you can make money selling travel. I have dne it for 36 years. And I am happy to finally hear a success story from a YTB person.
When someone is a CTC and a CTIE ike myself, I do not like people selling travel and knowing absolutely nothing about it. And no follow up! Yes, there have been instance of that $10,000 check being shown to anyone who walks in Reno!
It is this typce of deceit and lies that rubs us the wrong way and nothing against legitimate travel consultants. Ask your husband how he feels about Chiropractors or Ayurvedic practioners. It takes a lot to earn an MD just like it takes a lot to earn an CTIE. Because of that, the last two days were worth $26,000 in business for me(paid for, not future). You are both professionals like we are and I respect that. Competition like yours I like- it keeps me on my toes. None of us like RTA's walking into our offices trying to sell the website; or selling websites to the bartender, bus drivers, printers etc.
