City of San Antonio spokeswoman April Luna says much of the water was drained Monday. Luna says sediment will be removed to improve water quality.

Crews concentrated on the main channel and the river loop.

The joint project involves the city and the San Antonio River Authority, which plans to do maintenance on a lock and dam near Brooklyn Avenue.

Luna says a large drainage project, in 2010 and 2011, removed about 8.7 tons of sediment. The city skipped draining the San Antonio River in 2012 and 2013, then resumed in 2014 but not last year.

The timetable for this year's draining is through Saturday.
